So, I finally got to ride my new Western Saddle today for a good 3 hours. For the first 1/3 of the ride I wasn't sure if I had the right size. The fit is snug, and I was trying to find the sweet spot to sit. My back wasn't sure either. It was on and off. Finally, I shortened my stirrups up a hole and adjusted my leg position and Voila! I felt just right! For those with hip and knee pain, this saddle has a great narrow twist that does not rub. It allows you to plant your pelvis and stay there without the strain of the tree pulling your hips too wide. It didn't rub my butt either.
I sat a spin and a bolt today. The spin happens on occasion but the bolt was unusual. Mike was riding ahead of me and broke a branch that made a really loud crack. I think the deer we had just passed startled and ran off behind us. The back of that saddle said, "nope, you ain't falling backwards"! LOL. Bolting isn't really his thing so it surprised me.
He cantered off nicely when asked and it felt great going through the only dips we have here in Fl. Once I get the stirrups turned really well, I should be a happy camper. I was getting them turned nicely until I had to shorten the stirrups some more. Being on the short side always makes that a little harder. The mule seemed very happy and really ultimately spooked a lot less than normal. The spin was due to the mule in front turning on him, so I can't blame him for that one.
The horn is in just the right place. I only 'bumped' it one time ever so slightly and it's just the right height to rest my hands on. We walk a lot for long rides and it's nice to have a resting place for my hands which, apart from ponying, is why I kind of like having it. I never felt locked into it like I couldn't get out, yet I spun with that mule like nobody's business. I don't think I moved at all.
So, the trial run went very well. If you're on the fence, you might go ahead and jump. If you like a more supportive seat, order your normal size or 1/2 size less as the back of the seat actually cups your bum. If you like more room, order 1/2 size up. That is just my suggestion. John is pretty good at sizing you.
